Regionalisation, scarcity of resources, digitalisation, sustainability and the metaverse are questions that are driving the trade fair industry. Jörg Zeißig finds intelligent answers in the smartville.digital interview. And on the next big thing in live communication.
by Jörg Zeißig* | 15 September 2022
"We face the scarcity of resources with respect, but without fear.
"The consulting industry in particular needs personal dialogue as a basis for trust.
"Trade fair participation is less and less viewed singularly.
"The German trade fair system has well-founded substance.
"Regional, continental or international? There is a trend, but no patent remedy.
"I see the development of leading international trade fairs more as an opportunity for new business models and less as clinging to old structures.
"Hybrid, digital and physical: every industry, every target group will define its own path here as right and relevant for itself.
"The metaverse will keep us massively busy.
"The good thing about sustainability is that it is automatically discussed internationally and everyone has a goal.
I sleep well because in our job we have to deal with challenges every day. This is «normal» in our industry, we are currently actively facing the challenges of the situation on the procurement market and the general shortage of resources, with respect but without fear. All projects are in preparation in close cooperation with our customers and we are now looking forward to the largest Expo Real in our company history for Holtmann+.
One thing remains unchanged: our customers love the personal dialogue at Expo Real and are already very much looking forward to the big industry get-together. The consulting industry in particular needs personal dialogue as a basis for trust.
In addition, we are noticing an increasing focus on maximum efficiency in trade fair participation. We are discussing questions such as «How do we generate content at the fair that we can use flexibly?»
In the course of this, trade fair participation is increasingly viewed less singularly, but rather as a special part of a holistic live communication strategy. This makes the holistic support of clients from the concept to the cross-format implementation more coherent and sustainable in many respects.
The German trade fair industry has well-founded substance and organisers together with all stakeholders - customers, multipliers, opinion leaders, service providers - are driving innovation to prevent such a scenario from taking place.
People like to meet at trade fairs in Germany and expect well thought-out and innovative future solutions for this and other event formats.
Our industry will move closer together and, together with the public and politics, find approaches to deal with crises openly and to communicate invitingly, in particular to make our international audience want to attend trade fairs in Germany again without restrictions, with all points of contact.
If we mean regional by continental, then that is certainly not wrong. In essence, a format and its international reach naturally also depend on the flow of goods and general international interconnections within the value chain of an industry. In this respect, there is certainly a trend, but no patent remedy.
Continentalisation, on the other hand, offers opportunities for cooperation in the international event sector that can give rise to new business models.
I therefore see brand development from the perspective of leading international trade fairs more as an opportunity for new business models and less as clinging to old structures.
Live: hybrid and highly immersive!
Trade fairs are already hybrid, especially if we include pre- and after-show communication in the consideration. Trade fair formats will also continue to develop.
Trade fairs are and will remain a special part of a holistic live communication mix and are certainly the most complex and a highly immersive form of an event. Therefore, they deserve special attention and will retain their very high status within the holistic view of all communication measures of a year with clients.
Increasingly, trade fairs are being viewed in a more integrated way as part of the overall concept and thus automatically become hybrid, as digital and physical complement each other and partially merge. Every industry and every target group will define its own path as the right and relevant one.
We go very much beyond relationship management into the communication goals, so that formats are derived from the content of the communication, which in turn should inspire our clients' customers with the right messages and moments of encounter. This is only possible if we dedicate ourselves to a strategy as a sparring partner from the story and the content necessary for it, and we are happy to be responsible for its effective implementation.
Holtmann+'s recommendation is to bring together all partners for communication, press, public relations, strategy, design and implementation who are committed to an effective strategy with relevant content. This results in medium- to long-term concepts that are to be implemented sustainably.
In this way, we will be able to look after a smaller number of clients, if necessary, but we will be able to do so more comprehensively and in a much more targeted manner.
The debate about metaverse within the event industry and the long overdue implementation of sustainable event forms and event tools for the sustainable creation and implementation of events. Both will occupy us massively in this decade.
This will have to happen beforehand and we will get there in dialogue with all partners along the value chain. The industry is in discussion and there are many - also different - views on the topic.
The good thing about sustainability is that it is automatically discussed internationally and everyone has a goal. The way to get there and the timeframes are currently being initiated by relevant partners - industry, organiser and service provider associations as well as politics - and a common "roadmap" should be the result.
Each one will then define the individual details of his/her personal agenda. I am convinced that we will arrive at common guidelines and packages of measures, and Holtmann+ is actively involved in various rounds.
