Geneva Palexpo: Wo sich die Welt trifft
Zahlreiche der internationalen Fachmessen im traditionellen Palais des Expositions et de Congrès weisen wieder höhere BesucherInnezahlen als vor der Pandemie auf. Auch die gesunkenen Ausstellerbeteiligungen von 10 bis 15 Prozent werden sich wieder erholen, weil die Wirtschaft Messen braucht. Im Palexpo erhält die Wirtschaft jetzt wieder Impulse.
Das wurde manifest an unserem Besuch auf der EBACE, der globalen Leitmesse der Aviatikindustrie. Die Gänge waren voll wie eh und je – die teilweise glamourösen Auftritte der Aussteller glichen den eindrucksvollen Inszenierungen von Ausstellern am Internationalen Automobilsalon. «There’s no business without show business» - die ausstellende Wirtschaft ist mit ihren Marketingevents zurück.
Auch das Kongressgeschäft ist an den Genfersee zurückgekehrt. Die Genfer Messebaufirma Mathys SA kann sich vor Anfragen kaum retten.
«Seit der Aufhebung der Covidrestriktionen hebt das Business wieder ab. Unsere Auftragsbücher sind voll» sagt Christian Mathys, der mit seiner Mathys SA im Palexpo, der Romandie und international seit 1981 unterwegs ist. Mathys SA ist auf Monate hin ausgebucht. Auf der EBACE vom 23. bis 25. Mai setzte man die Credit Suisse (Bild oben) oder Sparfell in Szene.
Palexpo gleicht dem Rest der Schweiz kaum. Hier ist alles ein bisschen glänzender, ein bisschen größer und massiv international.
Kommt der Autosalon im 2023?
Der Internationale Automobilsalon konnte wegen Covid drei Mal nicht durchgeführt werden. Der Salon ist das Klumpenrisiko im Palexpo. Nachdem der Veranstalter, die Stiftung Geneva International Motor Show GIMS Quatar als Investor (nicht als Mitinhaber des Salons) gewonnen hat, sieht jetzt alles nach einer erneuten Austragung im Jahr 2023 aus.
«Unsere größte Herausforderung» sagt Palexpo Generaldirektor Claude Membrez (links) «besteht aber in der Unsicherheit über die Weiterentwicklung unseres Messezentrums. Sind wir zu groß oder zu klein für die Zukunft von Messen und Events in Genf?» fragt er.
Messen wie die EBACE, die Vitafoods oder der Internationale Automobilsalon mit zu den besten Zeiten um die 700'000 Besucherinnen könnten in Zukunft flächenmäßig an ihre Grenzen stoßen. Für viele der restlichen Events im Palexpo ist das Zentrum aber zu groß aber nicht währen dem Hochsaison.
Die Austragung des Internationalen Automobilsalons wird das finanzielle Ergebnis des Palexpo naturgemäß maßgebend beeinflussen. Aber das ist nicht das Kernproblem von Generaldirektor Claude Membrez. Im 2022 und im 2023 finden sich fast keine Fenster mehr für Events, Lieferschwierigkeiten und Personalmangel sind die weiteren Herausforderungen nach der Pandemie.
«Wegen der Pandemie müssen wir den Messe- und Kongresskalender im Palexpo komplett neu planen. Auch muss die gesamte Lieferkette neu organisiert werden, nicht nur wegen dem Personalmangel, sondern auch wegen dem Ansteigen der Preise», sagt Claude Membrez.
15 Prozent weniger Aussteller im Tor zur Welt
Dass es im Palexpo schwierig ist, zu einem Austragungsfenster zu kommen hat auch damit zu tun, dass das Palexpo zwischen Bern und Lyon das einzige größere Messezentrum ist.
Der Schmelztiegel zwischen alemannischer und frankophoner Kultur umfasst einen Wirtschaftsraum mit 2 Millionen Verbrauchern und Genf ist mit seinen internationalen Messen bei weitem der internationalste Messeplatz der Schweiz. «Seit Messen wieder möglich sind, werden sie wieder von gleich vielen BesucherInnen wie vor der Pandemie besucht, aber der Rückgang von 10 bis 15 % an Ausstellern muss wieder kompensiert werden.»
Angesichts dieser Situation im Palexpo sagt Claude Membrez, der immer wieder gehörte Einwand, Messen hätten ihren Zenit überschritten, sei höchstens ein Problem in der deutschsprachigen Schweiz, das aber dem Ansehen der Messewirtschaft schade.
Nicht vergessen werden darf das Messe-Flaggschiff «Watches & Wonders» (Bild oben) im Palexpo. Sie ist die Nutznießerin des Untergangs der Baselworld. Mit 22000 Fachbe-sucherInnen ist sie ein Beweis, dass gut aufgezogene Messen auch post-Covid und im Zeitalter der allumfassenden Digitalisierung eine weitere Renaissance erleben werden.
«Digitale Formate werden weiter zulegen. Aber jetzt, nach dem Restart der Messewirtschaft, tritt das Thema «digitale Messe» total in den Hintergrund, sagt Claude Membrez. «Direktkontakte sind unersetzlich, Menschen sind soziale Wesen», sagt er.
Online und Offline: Die Vernetzung der Welt im Palexpo
«Wir sind zurück!», sagt EBAA Generalsekretär Athar Husain Khan in seinem emphatischen Eröffnungsreferat auf der Aviatikmessen EBACE vom 23. bis 25. Mai 2022 im Palexpo. Er nahm damit Bezug auf den covidbedingten dreijährigen Unterbruch der Leitmesse und gab seiner Erleichterung Ausdruck, dass Businessmeetings wieder physisch möglich sind.
Seit 2001 findet die Weltleitmesse der Aviatikindustrie im weltoffenen Palexpo statt. Zur nach Corona neu lancierten Messe im Mai 2022 kamen gemäß dem Veranstalter NBAA mehr BesucherInnen als vor der Pandemie. Die EBACE ist nicht nur der jährliche Höhepunkt der Businesscommunity in der Luftfahrt. Sie glänzt auch mit Berühmtheiten, die von ihren Erfolgsrezepten erzählen und den Glamour Genfs via YouTube in die Welt tragen.
Auf der EBACE im Mai 2022 war das das vielbeachtete Keynotereferat der Goodwill-Botschafterin der Vereinten Nationen und ersten syrischen Flüchtlingsfrau, die Pilotin wurde, Maya Ghazal mit ihrem Credo «Alles ist möglich, wenn Du an Dich glaubst.»
Tennislegende Martina Navratilova (rechts) und die bahnbrechende Pilotin Zara Rutherford (links) - beide Rekordbrecherinnen und Fliegerinnen - begeisterten das Publikum während einer aufregenden Eröffnungsrede, die zum ersten Mal in der Messe stattfanden. Diese Weltoffenheit findet sich nirgends sonst auf Schweizer Messegeländen. Im Palexpo wird die Welt vernetzt.
Häufig wird vom Rückgang der großen internationalen Leitmessen gesprochen oder deren Abwanderung nach Asien. Wer sich ein Bild darüber machen will, dass diese Aussage nicht alle Industrien betrifft, der besuche einfach die internationalen Fachmessen und Kongresse im Palexpo. Geneva Palexpo: Where the world meets
Many of the international trade shows at the traditional Palais des Expositions et de Congrès or Palexpo in short are again attracting higher visitor numbers than before the pandemic. Exhibitor participation, which has fallen by 10 to 15 percent, will also recover because the economy needs trade shows. At Palexpo, the economy is now getting a boost again.
This was manifest at our visit to EBACE, the leading global trade show for the aviation industry. The aisles were as full as ever - the exhibitors' sometimes glamorous appearances resembled the impressive stagings of exhibitors at the International Motor Show. "There's no business without show business" - the exhibiting industry is back with its marketing events.
The congress business has also returned to Lake Geneva. The Geneva exhibition construction company Mathys SA can hardly save itself from inquiries.
«Since the lifting of the covid restrictions, business is taking off again. Our order books are full», says Christian Mathys, who has been operating his Mathys SA in Palexpo, French-speaking Switzerland and internationally since 1981. Mathys SA is booked up for months. At EBACE from May 23 to 25, they put Credit Suisse or Sparfell in the spotlight.
Palexpo is hardly like the rest of Switzerland. Here, everything is a bit shinier, a bit bigger and massively international.
Will the Motor Show take place in 2023?
The International Motor Show could not be held three times because of Covid. The Salon is the lump risk at Palexpo. Now that the organizer, the Geneva International Motor Show Foundation has attracted GIMS Quatar as an investor (not as a co-owner of the Salon), everything looks like it will be held again in 2023.
«But our biggest challenge» says Palexpo General Manager Claude Membrez «is the uncertainty about the further development of our exhibition center. Are we too big or too small for the future of trade shows and events in Geneva?» he asks.
Fairs such as EBACE, Vitafoods or the International Motor Show, with around 700,000 visitors at the best of times, could reach their limits in terms of space in the future. For many of the remaining events at Palexpo, however, the center is too large but not during the high season.

Palexpo after the pandemic
The staging of the International Motor Show will naturally have a significant impact on Palexpo's financial results. But this is not the core problem of General Director Claude Membrez. In 2022 and in 2023, there are almost no windows left for events, supply problems and staff shortages are the other challenges after the pandemic.
«Because of the pandemic, we have to completely re-plan the exhibition and congress calendar at Palexpo. Also, the whole supply chain has to be reorganized, not only because of the lack of staff, but also because of the increase in prices», says Claude Membrez.
15 percent fewer exhibitors: but gateway to the world
The fact that it is difficult to find a venue at Palexpo also has to do with the fact that Palexpo is the only major exhibition center between Berne and Lyon.
The melting pot between Alemannic and Francophone cultures encompasses an economic area with 2 million consumers, and Geneva, with its international trade shows, is by far the most international trade show venue in Switzerland. «Since trade fairs have become possible again, they are again attended by the same number of visitors as before the pandemic, but the 10 to 15% drop in exhibitors must be compensated again.»
In view of this situation at Palexpo, Claude Membrez (left) says that the repeatedly heard objection that trade fairs have passed their zenith is at most a problem in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, but one that damages the reputation of the trade fair industry.
The trade fair flagship «Watches & Wonders» (picture below) at Palexpo should not be forgotten. It is the beneficiary of the demise of Baselworld. With 22,000 trade visitors, it is proof that well-mounted trade fairs will also experience a further renaissance post-Covid and in the age of all-encompassing digitization.
«Digital formats will continue to grow. But now, after the restart of the trade fair industry, the topic of ‚digital trade fair’ is totally taking a back seat, says Claude Membrez. «Direct contacts are irreplaceable, people are social beings», he says.
Online and offline: Bringing the world together at Palexpo
«We're back!» said EBAA Secretary General Athar Husain Khan in his emphatic opening address at the May 23-25, 2022 EBACE aviation show at Palexpo. He was referring to the covid-related three-year hiatus of the flagship show and expressed relief that business meetings are once again physically possible.
Since 2001, the world's leading trade show for the aviation industry has been held at the cosmopolitan Palexpo. More visitors than before the pandemic came to the May 2022 show, which was relaunched after Corona, according to organizer NBAA. EBACE is not only the annual highlight of the aviation business community. It also shines with celebrities who tell of their recipes for success and carry the glamour of Geneva to the world via YouTube.
At EBACE in May 2022, that was the much-watched keynote presentation by United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and first Syrian refugee woman to become a pilot, Maya Ghazal, with her credo «Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.»
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova and pioneering pilot Zara Rutherford - both record-breakers and aviators - wowed the audience during an exciting opening speech, the first time they had ever been held at the show. This cosmopolitanism is found nowhere else at Swiss exhibition centers. At Palexpo, the world is networked.
