From 5–7 May 2026, SurfaceTechnology GERMANY 2026 will bring the international surface engineering community to Stuttgart at a pivotal time. With economic pressures mounting and technological demands accelerating, the event is positioned as a key meeting point for companies looking to navigate an increasingly complex industrial landscape through collaboration and innovation.

The challenges facing the sector remain significant, with little immediate relief in sight. Rising energy costs continue to weigh heavily on production, while strict environmental regulations, ranging from REACH compliance to broader sustainability targets, are reshaping operational priorities. At the same time, a persistent shortage of skilled labour is limiting capacity, and order volumes remain subdued across much of the market. Overlaying these pressures are ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, which continue to disrupt supply chains and investment confidence. For many businesses, the need to invest in digital automation and modernise existing systems adds another layer of financial and strategic strain.

In this context, the importance of industry dialogue has intensified. Ramtin Randjbar-Moshtaghin, Project Director at Deutsche Messe, highlights this shift:

“Especially in challenging times, personal exchange becomes more important than ever. Dialogue, cooperation, and shared approaches to solutions are essential. SurfaceTechnology Germany provides a platform for exactly this, bringing together innovation, knowledge transfer, and networking to create space for discussion and practical solutions.”

Surface engineering itself remains a fundamental pillar of modern industry. As a cross-sector enabling technology, it underpins a wide range of core industries, including mobility, mechanical engineering, metal processing, aerospace, medical technology, and electronics. Its role in ensuring product performance, durability, and efficiency makes it a critical driver of industrial value creation and long-term competitiveness.

The event benefits from the support of key industry bodies, including Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik (ZVO) and VDMA Surface Technology, both of which are actively engaged in shaping political and regulatory frameworks. Their involvement reflects a broader effort to safeguard businesses, protect jobs, and strengthen Germany’s position as a leading industrial location.

This breadth is reflected across the exhibition itself, where twelve distinct focus areas will showcase the full spectrum of surface technology. Exhibitors from around the world will present their latest innovations, products, and services, placing a strong emphasis on direct engagement with professional visitors. Alongside individual exhibitors, the ZVO joint pavilion will feature around 60 participating companies, while the “Surface Technology Process Chain”, organised by WOTech GbR, will highlight the interconnected nature of modern production processes.

Knowledge transfer will play a central role throughout the event, particularly within the STG ExpertForum. Hosting around 50 specialist presentations, the forum is designed to deliver the highest level of practice-oriented insight into the industry’s most pressing topics. Discussions will explore the integration of artificial intelligence into surface technology, the development of advanced surface solutions for energy applications such as next-generation batteries and hydrogen technologies, and strategies for avoiding PFAS in industrial processes. The issue of workforce development will also take centre stage, with a focus on training and qualification in response to the ongoing skills shortage.

A key highlight of the programme will be the presentation of the Stuttgart Surface Technology Award “DIE OBERFLÄCHE”, awarded by Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) on the opening day of the exhibition, recognising outstanding innovation within the field.

SurfaceTechnology Germany will also benefit from strong synergies with its co-located events, GrindingHub and MedtecLIVE. Together, the three exhibitions create a broader industrial ecosystem, offering visitors expanded insights and networking opportunities across related sectors. A single ticket provides access to all events, further reinforcing the integrated nature of the experience.
